The order
- 01X-Men (2000)1h44Required✓ 2026-11-04NOW PLAYING
Required. The metaphor, the Charles–Erik schism, and the casting everyone else inherits.✉
- 02X2: X-Men United1h44Required✓ 2026-11-04
Required. Still the series' best-paced entry — and the sacrifice that Days of Future Past canonizes.✉
- 03X-Men: The Last Stand1h44Optional✓ 2026-11-04
Optional. Rushed and crowded; Days of Future Past quietly undoes most of it anyway.✉
- 04X-Men Origins: Wolverine1h47Skip✓ 2026-11-04
Skip. Its reputation is earned — and the franchise itself retcons it out one film later.✉
- 05X-Men: First Class2h12Required✓ 2026-11-04
Required. The young Charles and Erik who make Days of Future Past's timeline emotionally legible.✉
- 06The Wolverine2h06Optional✓ 2026-11-04
Optional. Uneven bridge to Logan — the funeral promise is the one thread that carries over.✉
- 07X-Men: Days of Future Past2h12Required✓ 2026-11-04
Required, twice over: the best film in the series AND the retcon that rewrites where the prequels were heading.✉
- 08Deadpool1h48Required✓ 2026-11-04
Required. The Fox timeline's R-rated corner opens here, and the modern Marvel road assumes you know him.✉
- 09Logan2h17Required✓ 2026-11-04
Required without qualification. The ending the first two timelines earned — and the reason the speedrun exists.✉
- 10Deadpool 21h59Required✓ 2026-11-04
Required. Cable's arrival and the time-travel stinger are the doors the crossover era walks through.✉
- 11Dark Phoenix1h54Skip✓ 2026-11-04
Skip. The retcon already rewrote this ending once; this version adds nothing the road needs.✉

What you can skip
- skip The New Mutants (2020) Stranded horror detour made in the Fox-to-Disney limbo. Nothing references it. ✉
- recommended X-Men '97 (2024) Excellent animated revival of the 90s series — separate continuity. Watch it for itself, anytime. ✉
- required Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) Lives on the MCU roadmap, not this one — but every cameo it lands pays off the Fox films here. ✉
- recommended X-Men (2028) Unreleased — the MCU reboot opens May 5, 2028. The date this page's countdown runs to. ✉

Why this order
The X-Men film problem is not order — it is two timelines shaking hands in the middle. The original series ran 2000 to 2006, a prequel series restarted the clock in 2011, and Days of Future Past merged the two so thoroughly that any 'chronological' list ends up arguing with itself. This roadmap takes the only defensible position: release order, first watch, every time. The retcon inside Days of Future Past rewrites the prequel timeline's future, and it plays exactly as designed when you have met the older cast first. A timeline-order view adds nothing to this franchise, so we do not offer one — the FAQ explains why.
Verdicts here are harsher than the MCU page, because the X-Men line is streakier and your evenings are real. The 2000 opening and X2 are required: they define the metaphor, the Magneto–Charles relationship, and the Wolverine everyone keeps recasting. First Class is required because the younger cast makes Days of Future Past work, and Days of Future Past is required twice over — it is both the best film in the series and the hinge that Deadpool and Logan hang from. The Last Stand drops to optional, Origins: Wolverine is marked skip outright (its reputation is earned), and The Wolverine stays optional as the uneven bridge to Logan. Logan is required without qualification: it is the ending the first two timelines earned, and it is the reason the speedrun path exists.
The Deadpools sit inside the required column for one reason: the Fox timeline hands the character its exit in Deadpool and Wolverine's crossover era, and both films are load-bearing for anyone following the modern Marvel road. The full eleven-film list here runs about 21.5 hours; the essentials path — seven films — lands near 14 hours, and the six-film speedrun comes in around 11.7. The page now carries a live deadline too: the MCU's rebooted X-Men opens May 5, 2028, and the countdown and pace calculator run against that date — the first mutant project with a calendar slot since the Fox line ended. Until it arrives: check off as you watch, export a sync code before you clear your browser, and trust the skip list — Dark Phoenix and the rest are on it with reasons, not rumours.
The modern Fox era deserves its own paragraph because it is where the series stopped being a superhero franchise and started being the X-Men again. First Class re-cast the prequel era with actors who could actually play the Charles-and-Erik schism as a fifty-year relationship, and Days of Future Past used that casting to fix the timeline the earlier sequels had broken — a retcon executed inside the story rather than behind a press release. The Wolverine is the uneven valley between two peaks: keep the funeral promise it sets up, forgive its third act, and Logan will land twice as hard, because Logan is not a superhero film at all — it is a western about legacy that assumes you know why this particular man is tired of being the last one standing. The two Deadpool films then hand the Fox universe its exit door, one fourth-wall joke at a time, and the crossover era on the Marvel road collects on everything this page sets up.
Practical notes for whoever is actually driving this marathon: the bulk-import anchor works the same way as on every page here — declare the last X-Men film you genuinely remember and the tracker checks the earlier list off in one tap, so your remaining hours start truthful. The stop-point and skip logic carries over too: Origins is marked skip rather than optional because the franchise itself retconned it, Dark Phoenix is marked skip because the retcon had already told this ending better, and both rulings print their reasons on the entry instead of hiding behind a star rating. When you finish Logan, the checklist offers the road-complete moment — and if your next stop is the Marvel road, the MCU tracker is one header link away, with your sync code carrying whatever progress you want to take with you.
FAQ
- What order should I watch the X-Men movies in?
- Release order. This franchise has two timelines that merge in Days of Future Past, and every chronological re-ordering has to argue with that retcon. Release order is how the reveals were written — and it is the only order that survives the merge.
- Do I need to watch First Class before Days of Future Past?
- Yes. Days of Future Past cuts between the original cast and the First Class cast, and the younger timeline only carries weight if you have spent a film with that Charles and Erik. First Class is marked required on this page for exactly that reason.
- Is X-Men Origins: Wolverine really skippable?
- Really skippable. It is marked skip on this page — the film itself was retconned out by the next one, and nothing downstream depends on it. If you are completionist-curious, watch it last and enjoy the unintended comedy.
- Why is there no timeline order view for X-Men?
- Because Days of Future Past erases it: the film ends by rewriting the prequel timeline's future, so any in-universe ordering contradicts itself halfway through. Release order is the honest lens here, and the tracker keeps one clean list instead of two that fight.
- How long does it take to watch every X-Men movie?
- The eleven films on this roadmap total about 21.5 hours. The seven essentials run near 14 hours, and the six-film speedrun lands around 11.7 hours. The tracker updates your remaining hours as you check films off.
