The order
- 01Spider-Man (2002)2h01Required✓ 2026-11-04NOW PLAYING
Required. The origin every later film — and No Way Home's whole emotional engine — is built on.✉
- 02Spider-Man 2 (2004)2h07Required✓ 2026-11-04
Required. Still one of the best superhero films ever made, and Otto Octavius matters again after twenty years.✉
- 03Spider-Man 3 (2007)2h19Optional✓ 2026-11-04
Optional. Crowded and messy — nothing in it is load-bearing for anything that follows. Watch it for itself, skip it guilt-free.✉
- 04The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)2h16Optional✓ 2026-11-04
Optional. A reboot that mainly exists to set up its sequel — watch it only if you liked the idea of Garfield's take.✉
- 05The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)2h22Required✓ 2026-11-04
Required despite its trilogy being dead. What happens to Gwen — and who Peter loses — is the whole reason No Way Home can break your heart in 2021.✉
- 06Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)2h13Required✓ 2026-11-04
Required. Holland's origin is deliberately told off-screen in Civil War — this is where his actual story starts.✉
- 07Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)1h57Required✓ 2026-11-04
Required. Its own universe, but the concept it popularizes — anyone can wear the mask — is the DNA of everything multiverse since.✉
- 08Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)2h09Required✓ 2026-11-04
Required. The grief-and-legacy chapter — and its final twist is the fuse that No Way Home lights.✉
- 09Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)2h28Required✓ 2026-11-04
Required. The multiverse payoff the whole roadmap has been building toward — the less you know going in, the better it works.
⏸ Intermission — The post-credits scene teases the symbiote. Safe to skip: the Venom films are not needed for anything here. nowhere — the scene teases the Venom movies, which are not on this road.
- 10Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)2h20Required✓ 2026-11-04
Required. Half a story on purpose — brilliant, and it ends on a cliffhanger that is still hanging.✉
⏸ Intermission — Ends on a cliffhanger by design. Watch it as 'part one' and hold the finale-feel until Beyond opens on June 18, 2027. June 18, 2027 — when Beyond the Spider-Verse opens.
- 11Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026)2h25Required✓ 2026-11-04
Required. Peter's street-level reset — the current chapter of the character, and the freshest entry on the list.✉

What you can skip
Coming onto the road: Beyond the Spider-Verse (2027) — Dated for June 18, 2027. When it releases, it joins the roadmap automatically as the finale of the animated arc.
- skip Venom (2018) Separate Sony universe. Entertaining mess to some, a hard pass to others — either way, zero homework value. ✉
- skip Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) Same universe, same ruling. One skippable post-credits scene gestures at Spider-Man; that is the entire connection. ✉
- skip Venom: The Last Dance (2024) Closes Sony's trilogy. If you watched the first two for fun, finish it — but it is not on this road. ✉
- skip Morbius (2022) Its reputation is earned. Nothing it introduces matters anywhere in Spider-Man cinema. ✉
- skip Madame Web (2024) No continuity weight in any direction. The least 'homework' a superhero film has ever been. ✉
- skip Kraven the Hunter (2024) Sony's universe again. No payoff here, no payoff downstream. ✉
- skip Spider-Man: The New Animated Series / older TV (1994-2003 era) Nostalgia value only. No current continuity touches them. ✉

Why this order
Twenty-four years and three actors in, the Spider-Man film problem is no longer 'which order do I watch them in' but 'which of these eleven films actually deserve my evening'. This page takes a position: release order first, verdicts on everything, and no pretending that a 2002 B-movie web scene and a 2023 multiverse epic carry the same weight. If you have never seen a Spider-Man film, start at the top of the list and work down — the roadmap below is ordered by release year, which is also the order the references, jokes and payoffs were written for. The checklist keeps your progress on your own device, computes what is left in hours, and lets you filter down to just the essentials when a full rewatch is not realistic.
Why release order and not separate trilogies? Because No Way Home ended the argument. The 2021 film collapses the Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland continuities into one story, which retroactively turns two decades of Spider-Man cinema into a single arc with a planned payoff. That payoff only lands if you have met these characters where their films originally placed them: Maguire before Maguire 2, Garfield before Garfield 2, Holland before Holland meets everyone. Watching the Amazing Spider-Man films after No Way Home is technically possible, but the multiverse reunion lands half as hard when the guest stars are strangers, so we mark The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as required even though its own trilogy is not.
Honesty about the skips is what makes the requirements credible. Spider-Man 3 is optional not because it is bad but because nothing in it is load-bearing for anything that follows — enjoy it if you have the time, skip it guilt-free if you do not. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) sits in the same bucket: a reboot that exists mainly to set up its sequel, which is the one that matters. Everything Sony made around the character without the character — the Venom trilogy, Morbius, Madame Web, Kraven — is on the skip list with a one-line verdict each; if it is not on the roadmap, that is a judgment, not an oversight. Our rulings stay updated: each one carries a last-verified date and a note on why.
The arithmetic, since every guide dodges it: all eleven included films total roughly 24.6 hours. The essentials-only path cuts that to about 20 hours across nine films, and the speedrun — seven films that make every crossover payoff work — lands near 15.5 hours. The page now carries a live deadline too: Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the finale of the animated arc, opens June 18, 2027 — the countdown and pace machinery run against that date. Check off films as you watch and your progress is saved locally, exports to a portable sync code, and survives the page — no account, no email, no tracking, because a movie checklist should take less effort than the movies.
How we decide: a film is required when a later entry on this list (or the wider Marvel road it feeds into) directly references its characters or events in a way that changes how the later film plays. Recommended means it deepens the experience without being load-bearing. Optional means watch it for itself. Skip means the honest answer to 'do I need this' is no — and we say why in one line. The full criteria live on the methodology page, every verdict shows when it was last checked, and if you think we got one wrong, the mail link at the bottom of every verdict is read by a human.
FAQ
- What order should I watch the Spider-Man movies in?
- Release order. The roadmap above is sorted by release year, which is also the order the references and payoffs were written for. No Way Home pulls characters and threads from all three generations, so the more of the earlier films you have seen in their original order, the harder it lands. A timeline view adds nothing here because each trilogy keeps its own continuity.
- Do I need to watch the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield movies before No Way Home?
- For the full effect, yes. Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 are marked required on this page for exactly that reason: the multiverse reunion in No Way Home pays off what those films set up decades earlier. That said, No Way Home works as a stand-alone movie too — the speedrun path exists if you would rather arrive with the minimum.
- Do I need to watch Venom before Spider-Man: No Way Home?
- No. The Venom trilogy lives in Sony's separate universe, and its connection to Spider-Man amounts to a single skippable post-credits scene. Our verdict: fun if you like Venom, but zero homework value — the skip list has the one-line ruling for each film.
- Are the Amazing Spider-Man movies worth watching?
- The first one is optional — it mostly retreads origin ground. The sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, is required on this page, because what happens in it (and to whom) is the emotional payload No Way Home carries. Andrew Garfield's performance across both is the reason his cameo lands the way it does.
- How long does it take to watch every Spider-Man movie?
- All eleven films on this roadmap total about 24.6 hours. Essentials-only (nine films) is about 20 hours, and the seven-film speedrun comes in near 15.5 hours. The checklist tracks hours remaining automatically as you go.
- Is Into the Spider-Verse part of the MCU?
- No — Miles Morales and the Spider-Verse films run in their own universe, which is why they are tagged separately here. They are still marked required: the 'anyone can wear the mask' idea they popularize is the concept the live-action multiverse films lean on. Watch them between Homecoming and Far From Home, or anywhere you like; nothing breaks.
